Slovenj Gradec is the administrative, econimic and cultural centre of the Mislinja valley. It is sheltered between the mountain of Uršlja gora and the western ridge of the Pohorje range. The town is known for its artist and numerous events. The old town centre has remained the focus of cultural and social life right up to the present day.
Slovenj Gradec has always been and remains rooted within its historical and cultural traditions. Some prominent people were born and lived in this ancient town, among them the composer Hugo Wolf, the sculptor Fran Berneker, the painters Jože Tisnikar, Karel Pečko, Bogdan Borčič, Franc Berhtold, writers Franc Ksaver Meško and Ljuba Prenner, and others.

Numerous exhibitions in the art gallery and events (some of them under the aegis of the UN) have brought the town closer ti its foreign neighbours, and that is how in 1989 Slovenj Gradec got the distinguished title of herald of peace (a Peace messenger City).
